Personality:
Two Positives. He is loyal to his friends, he won’t give up on any one of them–– from when Kairi insists she and Sora take the raft and leave Riku out and when Riku insists Sora’s leaving he and Kairi out Sora is insistent that he does not leave any one of his friends out. Sora’s courageous in his endeavors to protect his friends, in a sense recklessly as he sometimes leaps without looking; this is due to the strength from his heart. An example of this is when Riku beckons Sora to follow him in the darkness Sora reaches out to Riku despite not knowing what the darkness is or what’s happening around them.
Another example, I feel compelled to mention, is how he treated Naminé (a witch with the power to control Sora's memories); even though she had manipulated his memories, inserted herself in his history, and plucked out one of the most important people in his life (Kairi) he still concluded to treat her kindly, forgive her, and regard her as a friend even though the foundation of that friendship was a lie. Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories is a game in between the first KH and the second KH to which Sora eventually does not remember these events, however, he has demonstrated positive qualities and character development through the game. Even though he does not recall these experiences, his character remains true between the first KH and the second KH.
Most importantly, Sora has an excellent sense of morals; even when it means he’s got to stand up to his friends. When Sora confronts Riku about his friend’s kidnapping of Pinocchio (a puppet—you may have heard of him :D idk?) Sora informs Riku his conscience is telling him that his friend is operating on the wrong side here to achieve his goals. While he does want to work with Riku to save their mutual friend Kairi, he can’t be persuaded to join Riku on his path to achieve it. However, even with differences such as these he is still very loyal to his friend and worries about his well being.
Two Negatives. Sora doesn’t demonstrate common respect for others, he has poor manners, poor sense of boundaries, and social pleasantries. He calls Cid “gramps”, he asks strangers about personal topics (as seen through some of the dialogue with npcs), and often neglects taking his enemies seriously in some of the ways he verbally or physically responds to them. Additional evidence is when he takes over the controls of a spaceship belonging to someone else to go off course and look for his friends. He doesn’t like to be thought of as insignificant or left out because of his age, in fact, he doesn’t take too kindly when someone refers to him as simply “a kid”. Some of Sora’s behaviors indicate he may be spoiled, entitled, and thoughtless at times for others and their feelings –– although, he would be upset to find he’s hurt a friend’s feelings. Sora does demonstrate some manners, especially to those who have helped him along the way; Cid, for example, even though Sora teases him and calls him “gramps,” Sora also vocalizes gratitude for Cid’s help along the way.
At the beginning of Sora’s journey he’s really focused on finding his friends and less on finding the king or preserving the worlds that are left via “locking the keyhole” (it keeps the worlds safe from dissipating into darkness). This is seen throughout some of his interactions and there are occasional times in which Sora needs to be guided by others and told what to do - to keep him focused. Goofy and Donald (Sora’s companions within the games) are at first acquaintances who have the means to be able to search across different worlds: Wonderland, Deep Jungle, Agrabah, etc. each of these places are considered to be their own worlds in which the trio takes a spaceship to travel between these worlds. Eventually Sora does begin to open up to the idea of his greater responsibility is not just saving his friends but also saving the worlds. He also finds friendship with Goofy and Donald as they endure this adventure together. This can be interpreted and perceived in a few ways which are quite normal for Sora's age group: selfish, narrow-sighted, reckless, entitled, and lacking empathy for others. Significant development is seen through the games as he transitions from what he really wants to begin taking on quests, responsibilities, and sacrifices for preserving the "larger picture," if you will.
Two Kind/Neutral. Sora is easily goaded into things by others, friends or enemies. Sora can be absent minded, oblivious, and acts confused a lot of the time. He is often seen in the game responding to others with, “huh, what, eh? … whaa?” Which is comical yet cohesive with his abstractedness. Sometimes, even with his friends, he can’t decipher between what’s a joke and what’s serious––as seen with Riku teasing Sora about sharing a “legendary fruit” with Kairi. Sora can get pretty frustrated with others when he feels like they’re intentionally being ambiguous.
Sora is (by game mechanic’s design as well) naturally inquisitive. He will talk to everyone there is to talk to. He will investigate anything and everything there is to look at and he will even take things that are not necessarily things people would traditionally take as what is typically curved into our understandings by social norms and behaviors: opening treasure chests in people’s homes and taking items inside it.
“This is totally weird,” Sora’s first few moments of consciousness in a new world, Traverse Town, is first clouded by the thought he was dreaming. When he concludes this isn’t a dream he turns to a dog, Pluto, and questions if the dog happened to know where they were. I’m pointing this out because he seems to find asking a dog something that isn’t particularly abnormal and even seems to be perturbed the dog runs away instead of answering his question. This, in my mind, really sets the expectation of how he is going to be handling people of all sorts of different worlds from hence forth. People who are not necessarily of the “human” species kind, but of all varieties of races. Thus, his transition across worlds is not particularly made up with a great deal of time being bewildered about physical differences of others in comparison to himself.
In the beginning of the game his friends define Sora as indolent and someone who doesn’t take things too seriously. He’s even seen to be laying about often, relaxing, daydreaming, and even falling asleep quite easily. He also has a bit of a difficulty distinguishing between what’s real and what’s a dream. Additionally, there has been some examples within the game of him hallucinating and becoming distracted by visions that only he can see. Specifically, Sora can see Kairi sometimes - through the game - because her heart rests within him and this allows him to feel/see her presence. While this is true, Sora has proven time and time again he is capable of completing difficult tasks and participating in complex roles as he moves across worlds and has to integrate himself within those worlds/cultures to accomplish his tasks as well as help others from those worlds.
